End the Stigma: Why Mental Health Conversations Matter in the Desi Community

Growing up in an Indian household, I never heard words like anxiety, therapy, or burnout.
If you cried too much, you were “too sensitive.”
If you were quiet, you were “moody.”
If you said you were tired, someone always replied, “You have everything — what’s there to be sad about?”

For years, I believed something was wrong with me for feeling overwhelmed.

The Turning Point

It wasn’t until I moved away from home that I realized — I wasn’t broken.
I was just carrying years of suppressed emotions, taught to stay quiet, smile through everything, and be grateful instead of honest.

I remember one particularly hard week when I couldn’t bring myself to get out of bed. Instead of being kind to myself, I felt guilty for not being productive. That’s when it hit me: we don’t need to be “strong” all the time. We need to be real.

And that’s how The Curious Llama Store was born — from my own need to express, heal, and help others do the same.

Turning Pain Into Purpose
